As an interim director, I have worked in many local authorities and have only recently come to Croydon. What has been exhilarating for me as I’ve met staff working at all levels in children’s social care is the sense of passion and commitment I’ve felt, seen and heard.
Children’s services in Croydon have faced up to some tough challenges over the past year as we accepted the disappointing Ofsted judgement. The whole council set out with determination to make lasting improvements, and the level of support for the service is palpable. Children’s services are a major priority for the council and we are enjoying extensive political and corporate support, including major investment. Our last monitoring report from Ofsted recognises the improvements to date, noting that Croydon is “progressing well in implementing their improvement plan and they have quickly responded to issues identified in the first monitoring visit”. We are heading in the right direction but still have a lot to do.
So, Croydon is a place where you can make a real difference to the lives of children and their families. You can work with a wide range of needs, sometimes complex, and you can really grow your skills and practice. It is a place where you can influence what happens, and our social workers have been instrumental in helping us to develop our improvement plan. Their input, energy and determination has been invaluable, and will continue to be so. If you have a passion for social work, for making a difference and for improving lives, then come and be part of our improvement journey. We look forward to receiving your application.
